Overview of planned ALA components
This is a DRAFT – please send us your comments and suggestions.

The ALA is developing core systems and services needed for managing biodiversity information. These services will provide the foundation for future developments, including collaborative development of portals to support specific user groups.
The diagram provides an overview of the key components to be delivered as part of this core. Data resources are represented in blue. Components which the ALA expects to develop using NCRIS funds are represented in green.
The planned components are as follows:
- Data Provision Services – tools to assist data providers
- AFD/APC Service – authoritative taxonomic information for Australian species
- Metadata Repository – registry of information resources for Australian species
- Data Annotation Services – tools to handle comments and corrections to data
- Geospatial Data Harvesting – cache of occurrence records for Australian species
- GIS Services – maps and reports on the distribution of Australian species
- Taxonomic Services – tools to integrate information according to taxonomic hierarchies
- Species Information Services – overview of available information for each Australian species
- Online Identification Services – tools to assist with identification of Australian organisms
The ALA is undertaking a User Needs Analysis to gain a better understanding of the full range of user applications which should be supported and to prioritise their development.
